By: Mairead Foley

Belfast International Airport

Belfast International Airport is the main airport in Belfast. It is, in fact, the 2nd busiest airport in Ireland after Dublin. The airport is located about 21km northwest of Belfast city and is also known more locally as 'Aldergrove'.

Aldergrove was originally a Royal Flying Corps training site during WWI and later became an airport for the Royal Air Force.

The airport serves 48 destinations including transatlantic flights, domestic flights and charter flights. Transatlantic destinations include the Canadian cities of Vancouver, Halifax and Toronto and also Newark and Orlando in America. Belfast International Airport is well connected with the UK with regular flights to and from London Gatwick, London Stansted, London Heathrow and London Luton airports. It also has connections with Cardiff, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Bristol and Birmingham to name a few.

Belfast International Airport is a major base for airlines like EasyJet, Jet2.com, bmibaby and First Choice Airways.

Belfast city is just about a 30 minute bus ride from the airport. You can catch the Airport Express 300 bus from the bus stop across the way from the main terminal exit. It operated 24 hours a day and leaves every 10 minutes. A single ticket is £6 per person, return tickets is £9.

George Best Belfast City Airport

George Best Belfast City Airport is located near the Port of Belfast just over 3km from the city centre. In 2006, the airport name was changed to include 'George Best' in memory of the famous international soccer player associated with Belfast.

The airport serves a lot of UK destinations as well as Paris, Cork city and some Winter and Sun destinations.

Airlines that mainly use this airport include Flybe, bmi, Ryanair, Aer Arann and Manx2.

An airlink bus operates every 20 minutes between the airport terminal and Europe Bus Station in the city centre. A return trip will cost about £2.20.
