Buying a Cheap Caravan - Why, What and Where

By: Jack Burr

Buying a cheap caravan should not be too difficult today with easy access to numerous internet sites selling second hand caravans and rocketing fuel prices and transport costs putting the squeeze on many household budgets.

However, you should still exercise some discretion before rushing out to buy the first used caravan for sale that you find on the web.

Here are 7 factors you should at least keep in the back of your mind when you start looking for a suitable cheap caravan:

1) What purpose do you want the caravan for. The answer to this question will influence the 6 other factors you need to consider, but obviously if you are looking for a cheap caravan to put down at the bottom of the garden as a storage unit, then you will be looking for something quite different to the quality of caravan you want to go away on holiday in.

2) What size do you want and how important is size? There is a substantial difference in physical size between a 2 berth caravan and a 6 berth caravan - and that fact is invariably reflected in the price.

3) The age of the caravan. If you are wanting to utilise your purchase as a caravan, then the availability of spares needs to come into your reckoning. On the other hand, the older the cheaper in all likelihood.

4) The make and model of caravan. There are a wide range of caravans on the market - some better known and respected than others. If you are thinking of reselling at some point in the future or are going to travel widely in a geographic sense, then this point may become important.

5)The condition of the caravan. It doesn't make much sense to buy a cheap caravan if you are going to spend a fortune getting it into the shape you want it to be in. Far better - and probably cheaper and less hassle, would be to buy exactly what you need. There are certainly enough options on the used caravan market to choose from.

6) The Legalities - a cheap caravan could turn out to be very expensive if it turns out you are buying stolen property or have to make it roadworthy etc - so check first, then buy and not the other way round!

7) Last but not least - the actual cost you pay. In today's world it is pretty easy to compare the merits and prices of used touring caravans for sale ("touring" = with wheels as opposed to "static" caravans that generally cannot just be towed away) on the internet. So do some homework before you take the plunge.
