Cheap Web Hosting - What Will You Sacrifice?

By: Carl Spender

What makes cheap webhosting so cheap? What are you sacrificing in order to get a lower price? Nearly all cheap webhosting options are shared web hosting packages. This means, with certainty, that you are sacrificing several options in terms of security, speed and reliability.

Cheap, shared hosting packages are placed in large numbers on the same server. This means that if one of the other users does anything with their hosting that interrupts the operation of the server such as creating a CRON job incorrectly that continuously pulls resources away from the server, your site(s) and everyone elses will be affected by it. This could mean that your website could be offline for an undetermined amount of time due to the ignorance of just one user. Since there could be dozens of users sharing hosting on one server the odds are against you when it comes to possible crashes.

Shared web hosting also means shared bandwidth to the server. If one of the sharing users hosts a high traffic site, or a website that hosts a lot of flash or video that takes a long time to load, your website will suffer as a result. If you had the intention of hosting a site like that yourself, you probably don't want to do it on shared web hosting.

If one of the users that shares your hosting has security flaws within their site there is a chance that any potential damage that may be done will be done to the entire server, not any of that user's individual sites. The resulting limited bandwidth and crashes will be suffered by your site(s) as well.

Cheap web hosting is an alright option if your plan is to host several small, text based content sites and slow loading or downtimes will not affect your plans. Just remember that cheap web hosting is not always synonymous with affordable webhosting.
