The Spanish Arch is one of the top historic attractions in Galway city. It can be found near Flood Street on the left bank of the River Corrib and is said to be the remnants of the old city walls, which were built around 1854.

It's said that the arches were built to protect ships docked in the city's harbour from looting and got its name from Spanish trading ships which once frequented the city.

Now, the twin arches are all that remain from the 14 towers and gateways which once stood as the main walls of Galway city.
