Starting a Home Business: 5 Things You Should Know

By: Jeff Hoffman

The number of people who research online about starting a home business is on the rise. As someone with expertise in helping people get started, here are a few tips:

Tip #1) Before you start a home business, make sure it is truly a business. Choice is in abundance here - there are many opportunities you could take advantage of. As you decide which to pursue, here's the first thing to ask yourself: "Is it really a business?"

As you survey your choices, mystery shopping, data processing, survey completion, hit exchanges, and various other "businesses in disguise" may grab your attention. These are work at home jobs, not businesses.

What's the difference? If you've ever read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" by Robert Kyosaki, you know the answer: leverage. If you quit doing things like clicking ads, filling out surveys and mystery shopping, then you probably won't make money. But if you own a business, you make money while you sleep.

Tip #2) Be familiar with your budget. When starting a home business, you're going to need some money. Regardless of what you might hear or read online, a cost free home based business does not exist.

Set aside money for marketing. Will you write newspaper or magazine articles, use pay-per-click advertising, or run classified advertisements? Unfortunately, these types of advertising take either money or time, if not both.

Tip #3) You don't need to reinvent the wheel. Starting from scratch and creating your own system is not recommended for someone new to the business. Starting a home business is simple and straight-forward if you build on the work of others and start with a proven system.

You're probably familiar with franchises. Instead of starting a fast-food restaurant from scratch, it is far simpler to purchase a franchise such as McDonald's. From their real-world experience they've created an operations manual. Paint by the numbers and you'll succeed.

Starting a home business is no different. First follow, and succeed, with a system that you know already works. After that, make new things using your new skills. Really, don't make it any more difficult than necessary.

Tip #4) Build relationships. Your home based business will suffer without the participation of other people. Most basically, you need to have customers. But, starting a home business takes more than just customers.

You will need someone with experience to show you the landscape. In order to cross-promote your business, you should find some joint venture partners. It is important for you to find a supplier or manufacturer who will produce the goods or services that you are selling. The list is never ending. Even an Internet-based home business is going to require working with others.

Tip #5) The success or failure of your home based business hinges almost entirely on your ability to market. It truly doesn't matter how big your budget is, which system you go with, or how many people you know (unless one of them does the marketing for you.)

The key to a successful home business is your ability to find your target market and present them with an offer they can't refuse. If you're a master of marketing, your choice of business is much less important. You can make almost any business work. Thus, the saying, "...she could sell ice to eskimos."
